Middlemore Home for Waifs and Strays, St Lukes Road, Edgbaston ~ under the name of 'Children's Emigration Home'

The Home consisted of several buildings, including those for boys and girls. Applications were made for children whose parents could not or would not care for them, although permission had to be given for the children to be sent to Canada.

Dr John T. Middlemore (1844 -1924) started the Children's Emigration Home in 1872 when he was 28, and personally took the first 29 children to Canada in May 1873.

The Guthrie Home was opened 1874 in London, Ontario, where the Children were taken on arrival from Birmingham via Liverpool and Quebec City. They were then placed with families from the Guthrie Home.

The Guthrie Home closed in 1898, and a new Home was erected, called Fairview Home located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
