Abingdon Poor Law Union and Workhouse
The Abingdon Poor Law Union was declared 6th December 1834. The parishes of
Appleford, Appleton, Draycot Moor, Fyfield, Kingston-Bagpuise, Lyford, Milton,
Steventon, Sutton Courtney, Culham, Baldon Marsh, Baldon Toot, Binsey, Burcott,
Chislehampton, Clifton Hampden, Drayton, Nuneham-Courtney, Sandford, Stadhampton
and Tubney were added 12th September 1835, and the parishes of Bagley Wood and
Chandlings Farm were added 19th July 1858.
Abingdon Union comprises the following Parishes

In 1861 the area of the Union was 57,535 and the population 20,861.
The Board of Guardians met alternate Mondays at the Poor Law Institution at 11am to discuss Union matters.
The Workhouse was erected 1835 by Sampson Kempthorne, architect at a cost of £8,500 and could accommodate 380 inmates. It was built on the Oxford Road on the outskirts of the Town, a large structure of brick in the form of the letter "Y".

Abingdon (Berkshire) Workhouse was called the Grubber, it opened in 1835 and
closed and was demolished in 1931
