Chesterton Union

Chesterton Union Workhouse was erected 1836-1838 from designs by Architect John Smith. 

The Board of Guardians meet every alternate Thursday at 10.30 at the Workhouse. The population of the Union in 1901 was 33,246, area 80,995 acres, and rateable value at Lady Day 1908 £203,408.

The Union comprises the following parishes:- Barton, Cherry Hinton, Chesterton, Childerley, Comberton, Coton, Cottenham, Dry Drayton, Fen Ditton, Fulbourn, Girton, Grantchester, Harlton, Harston, Haslingfield, Hauxton, Histon, Horningsea, Impington, Landbeach, Madingley, Milton, Newton, Oakington, Rampton, Shelford, Stanton-Long All Saints, Stanton-Long St Mary, Stapleford, Stow-cum-Quy, Teversham, Trumpington, Waterbeach, Westwick, Wilbraham Great, Wilbraham Little and Willingham.

The Workhouse, a commodious brick building near the centre of the village, is capable of holding 250 inmates. Following the introduction of the National Health Service it became Chesterton Hospital in Union Lane, Cambridge.
