The Workhouse is a yellow brick building
standing on a commanding eminence a
quarter of a mile out of the City and is
capable of holding 248 inmates. Erected
1837 from designs by William Donthorne,
architect, at a cost of £7,000.
There is a spacious Board Room in which
the Guardians hold their meetings, and
impressive three storey Administration
Block.

When the National Health Service was
introduced in 1948 the Institution
became Tower House Hospital, becoming
Tower Hospital in 1953. It closed in
1993, and the site has been redeveloped
to provide residential accommodation
aptly called Tower Court, many of the
former workhouse buildings being
demolished.

from 1876 to 1956 and are held by
Cambridgeshire Record Office, Shire
