Altrincham Poor Law Union
and Workhouse
Altrincham Poor Law Union was declared 2 August 1836, and was divided into the 4 districts of Altrincham, Knutsford, Lymm, & Wimslow, which together embrace an area of 73,665 acres, & in 1851 had a population of
34,043 inhabitants, of whom 16,918 were males & 17,125 females.
The Altrincham district comprised: Altrincham, Dunham Massey, Bowden, Timperley, Ashton upon Mersey, Hale. Baguley, Sale & Ashley.
Knutsford district: Knutsford Superior, Knutsford Inferior, Pickmere, Tabley Inferior, Tabley Superior, Bexton, Plumley, Little Peover, Peover
Superior, Toft, Ollerton, Mere, Tatton, Rostherne, & Marthall.
Lymm district: Lymm, Agden, Bollington, Warburton, Partington, Millington,
High Leigh, Aston by Budworth, & Carrington.
Wimslow district: Mobberley, Northenden, Northern Etchells, Bollin Fee, Pownall Fee, &
Fulshaw.
The Union House, situated about a quarter of a mile W. by S. from the Church, was built in 1837, since which the hospital & other additions
have been made. The total cost has been upwards of £7000, & there is accommodation for 300 inmates. At the present time there is only 164.
The front part of the building is 3 stories high, the lower compartment being used as waiting rooms & master's office, above which are the board room, stores etc. A short distance in the rear of this building is an octagonal structure used as the governor's residence, from which
are 4 diverging wings, & these with the outer walls form 4 quadrangles in which the inmates are classified.
There are 44 guardians appointed, who meet every alternate Monday at the Board Room. Chairman, Robert Armstrong esq. Clerk & Supt.

A Night Asylum has been erected on the Heath Side which will accomodate about 80 persons. The average number of persons resorting hither for a night's sleep is usually about 20.
