Helston Workhouse and Poor Law Union
The Board of Guardians meet alternate Saturdays at 11.30am at the Workhouse,
Helston. The area of the Union is 73,333 acres, rateable value £88,905 and
population in 1891 was 22,117.
The Union comprised the following Parishes: Breage, Crowan, Cury, Germoe, Gunwalloe,
Grade, Helston, Landewednack, Manaccan, Mawgan in Meneage, Ruan Major, Ruan Minor,
St Anthony in Meneage, St Keverne, St Martin in Meneage, Sithney and Wendron.

The Workhouse, in Meneage Street, Helston is a large building of stone with
granite dressings, erected in 1858 from designs by the Architect Fred
William Porter. It later became The Meneage Hospital.
