Penzance Workhouse and Poor Law Union
The Board of Guardians meet alternate Thursdays at 11am at the Rechabite Hall,
Penzance. The population of the Union in 1891 was 48,045, area 64,879 acres and
rateable value in 1897 £177,276.
The Union consisted of the following Parishes: Gulval, Ludgvan, Madron,
Marazion, Morvah, Paul, Penzance, Perranuthnoe, St Buryan, St Erth, St Hilary, St Ives,
St Just in Penwith, St Levan, St Michaels Mount, Sancreed, St Sennen, Towednack,
Uny Lelant and Zennor.

Penzance Union Workhouse was erected 1838 in Madron from designs by the
Architects G. Gilbert Scott and W. Bonython Moffatt. Located on Mount View,
Penzance it later became the Penzance Institution and was closed at the
Introduction of the National Health Service in 1948.
