St Columb Major Workhouse and Poor Law Union
The Board of Guardians meet every alternate Thursday at the Workhouse Board
room, at 2pm Summer months and 1.30pm Winter months.
The Union comprises the parishes of St Breock, Colan, St Columb Major, St Columb
Minor, Crantock, Cubert, St Enoder, St Ervan, St Eval, St Issey, St Mawgan, St
Merryn, St Newlyn, Newquay, Padstow Urban and Rural, Little Petherick and St
Wenn.
The area of the Union is 78,582, rateable value in 1897 £88,353 and the
population in 1891 was 15,384.

The Workhouse, on the east side of the Town, is a building of stone, erected
about 1840. Its registered accommodation is for 180 inmates.
