Bideford Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Erected on Meddon Street, Bideford in 1836 from designs by G. Gilbert Scott and W. Bonython Moffatt, it could accommodate 200 Inmates.

Bideford Union - White Directory

Comprises 18 parishes. The total average annual expenditure on the poor, during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £7333, but in 1838, it was only £5225, & in 1849/50, £6428.17s.1d. 

The Workhouse was erected in 1835/6, & has room for 200 paupers. H A Harvie Esq, is union clerk & supt.registrar; the Rev H Alford, chaplain; Mr & Mrs Stevenson, master & matron of the Workhouse.
