Poor Law Union and Workhouse
The Union comprises 39 parishes. Their total average annual expenditure on
the poor during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union was £16,756.
In 1838 it was £12,938, & in 1840 £15,997.
The Workhouse, which has room
for about 400 inmates, is pleasantly situated on the eastern side of the town,
& is one of the best in England, both in external appearance & internal
arrangement. The building & furnishing cost about £13,000. The various
wards, yards etc occupy nearly 2 acres, & attached to it are about 2 acres
of garden ground. There are 56 elected guardians & the Rev C Wolston is
chairman. Mr John Alsop is the union clerk & supt.registrar; the Rev W F
Good, chaplain: & James & Mrs Blythe, master & matron of the
Workhouse.
