Comprises 28 parishes. Their average annual expenditure on the poor, during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £9157; but in 1838 it was only £6201, & in 1840, £7243. The expenditure for the half year ending Sept 1849 was £4625.The Workhouse, built in 1838, at the cost of £3600, has room for about 230 paupers. Mr Henry Hawkes is union clerk & supt.registrar; Mr Peter Paltridge & wife are master & matron of the Workhouse.
