Parish of Leicester
Board day every Tuesday at the Board Room, Pocklington's Walk at 6.30pm. The
Board meet in Committee on Tuesday morning at 9.30am for the relief of the poor.
The Parish of Leicester is comprised of the same area as the county borough of
Leicester, with a rateable value in 1899 of £799,350. The population in 1891
was 174,681.
The Clerk to the Guardians and Assessment Committee in 1899 was Herbert
Mansfield, and Chief Assistant Overseer of the Parish, William Earp.
The Workhouse, near the railway station, is a large brick building in the
Elizabethan style, capable of holding 1,078 inmates, the average number during
the last few years having been 950.
